Morning warmup exercise...

Booting up gagarin this morning got me a fruity, computerized Bronx cheer: "L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99..." This output went on for several lines on the screen, and my initial fear was that something had gotten permanently hosed, which would have been a hell of a start to the week.
Thank goodness for the Internet. A few minutes' research indicated that the problem likely had something to do with lilo, the venerable Linux boot loader (and recalling the 'kernel panic' from a few days ago puts me in a pensive frame, but I digress...).
What gagarin lacks in a floppy drive it makes up for with a bootable CD-ROM, so I booted Mandrake Linux 9.2 from one of those install disks that comes with a magazine, and typed 'rescue' after hitting 'F1' for something other than the installation process. Very conveniently, the Mandrake software offered me a set of choices, among which was 'restore Windows boot loader'. As it has been probably more than a year since I've booted the Linux partition on gagarin (which means I have no idea what's there, which means I can safely ignore it), I selected that option.
Gagarin is now back online.
We now return to our regularly scheduled workday.
Cheers...
