I remember I once proposed the subject as a line for a PR brochure for a translation company. It sounded so... right at the time, but looking back, nobody wants to have their business problems solved "one word at a time," they want the problems to be solved (a) immedately, (b) with no hitches, and (c) for free. Fireworks and good publicity are major pluses. If you want icing on the cake, arrange a fanfare or two for the client, or perhaps a nomination for a Nobel Prize.

My, I am being snippy today, aren't I?

I kept running into snags during today's session, but fewer of them. However, a couple of the problems had me looking things up in paper dictionaries that've been gathering dust around here, to no avail. The prize for the day goes to an attempt to figure out the difference between:

коэффициент нагрузки гребного винта по тяге: my try: propeller effective thrust load factor

and

коэффициент нагрузки гребного винта по упору: my try: propeller thrust load factor

There is some fine point I am missing here, obviously. Everything I could find seemed to point at тяга and упор meaning essentially the same thing (I get the feeling - using words like "seemed" and "essentially" - that this is where I likely went wrong). However, most Googled sources for for former term in Russian referred to коэффициент нагрузки гребного винта по полезной тяге, which is why I decided to differentiate the two with the use of the word "effective."

Gee, all that, and I guess it boils down to me effectively pulling a SWAG. Hmmm.

Anyway, out of what I finally determined was just over 7800 words left in the assignment, I've now got 3800 left to translate for tomorrow. Most or all of the front material is done, depending on how I should handle the TOC. Frankly, I'm more than half inclined to leave the TOC alone, since the editor will doubtless have to redo it from scratch anyway (I can ask about that first thing on Monday, I suppose).

For now, I need to get some rest.
