One of the figures in the document I was working on today had a figure that underwent some kind of warp, resulting in the conversion of CP 1251 (single-byte Cyrillic) characters into CP 1252 (single-byte "Latin 1") characters.

I was now faced with the prospect of undoing the conversion, taking something like, um,
ñèñòåìíûé àíàëèç ðèñêà
and rendering it as something readable, i.e.
системный анализ риска
Fortunately, I not only covered this particular issue in my presentation titled Navigating the Cyrillic "Swamp" made at the 2002 ATA Conference in Atlanta (has it really been almost ten years?), but I also kept track of the associated PowerPoint presentation, which helped me "decode" the gibberish in the figure back into Russian.

Going after a little of that wow! factor, y'dig?

No turn left unstoned! :^)

Cheers...

I dare to point Sir's attention to

http://www.artlebedev.ru/tools/decoder/

which could be quite advanced if you choose it to be, or quite straightforward and easy - again if you choose so.

Thanks for the link. I will be sure to check it out (although after what happened to sokr.ru—I now find there's a better than even chance I'll be served a screen of irrelevant garbage—I've cooled to offerings from artlebedev.ru).

Cheers...

That is just a decoder. Not sure about other offerings from that site. I'm not affiliated with it, I use it to convert badly encoded MP3 Tags in my music library. :)

P.S. It's not the first time my advice is perceived as a commercial offer. The previous time was when I asked our town shopping centre to provide their 3D scheme to Bing Venues...

Достигатор,

A "commercial offer" was the furthest thing from my mind! I was merely commenting on how my ardor for sokr.ru (and by extension for the rest of Lebedev's offerings, whether I had ever used them or not) had cooled after the sokr.ru site had been "improved."

As it turns out, the site would not have been very helpful for my particular travail, as the Latin 1 characters were embedded in a graphic (and pitifully spaced, to boot).

Cheers...
