I've been cutting up the railroad...
Jul. 9th, 2001 05:19 pmRailcars, actually.
Well, if truth be told, the document I translated today deals with slicing up mobile rail-based launchers, as part of the ongoing disarmament process.
The document was much easier to work with, and I again used Déjà Vu to help translate it, with much better results. I got about half the document done in a couple of hours, and the second half took a bit longer, as Shannon's parents and cousins showed up a few minutes after 1 pm.
I have one file left, ranging in difficulty somewhere between the first one I did Sunday and today's romp in the park. (Then again, the client called around 1:30 pm and asked if I could handle some more files. I agreed to take about 12 more pages, all due Wednesday. I am proud of the fact I did not agree to take the whole load of some 50 pages.)
Segue...
My efforts with RedHat 7.1 the other day ended in failure. The install went smoothly, but for some reason, a few seconds after starting to boot, the screen filled with formatted garbage and eventually, the machine hung.
I tried reinstalling and asking for a complete disk format and check of the disk surface, and again the install went smoothly, but the problem did not go away. The problem appears so quickly after the initial reading of data off the disk drive, that I finally decided to train my PC cam from my 'doze laptop onto the Linux screen to see if I could determine just where in the process the machine goes south.
Finally, this morning, I decided to take advantage of one of my two free support calls that come with the product. The young lady who heard me out wasn't able to solve my problem, but eventually found a bug report in RedHat's Bugzilla database from March of this year that matches my symptoms, down to using an eMachines 333cs. The person who initially reported the problem was able to make it go away by changing the CPU in his machine, which is something I'd like to avoid, if possible.
Anyway, when I got to a convenient point in my translation, I took a few minutes out to add a comment to the bug report, including the intelligence gleaned from frames 323 and 324 of my video, and have received a reply in e-mail with a suggestion that I plan to test when I get back home.
Drew hung in there all day at the store, until shortly after 4:40 pm. I dropped by around 10:30 for about an hour or so while he went downtown to get the mail and sort it back here. I returned again around 3:45 pm to help with the last-minute madness that occurs around here just prior to UPS pickup.
It was a good thing I did, because it was one of those particularly chaotic days where people are lined up with stuff that has to go out on an overnight basis, while at the same time the UPS guy is coming in the back door and asking us to shake a leg, as he is behind schedule and the weather is threatening.
Forty minutes to go.
Cheers...
