Instead of that Campari, last night I started installing Adobe Acrobat 5.0, which came in a box labeled: "This upgrade version of Adobe Acrobat 5.0 will install only if you are a licensed user of Adobe Acrobat 4.0 or earlier."

I was happy to find the box. I'd bought Acrobat 3.0 some time ago, but never felt the need to upgrade, until recently. An increasing number of clients provide source materials in PDF format (yeah, I know about the free Adobe reader, but the full edition gives you more options, including the ability to create PDF files).

At any rate, version 3.0 is "earlier" than version 4.0, right? So, I ought to be able to install the program, right?

Well, guess what? The CD will only install if you own Acrobat 4.0 or a later version.

I feel a conversation coming on with Adobe Customer Service (their web site was useless).

Time to get ready for the day.

Cheers...

[8:05 am: Quick update. The Adobe folks were helpful. All I need to do is give them the serial number of my 3.0 version, which will happen when I get home later today.]

Doug Thompson publishes interesting pieces at D.C. Darkside.

But, as the name implies, this is not your inspirational, cheerful, Chuck-Osgood-y kind of writing. It is... somber and dark.

His current essay, "Suddenly, it was all over," really hit me. A couple of others I read, such as The sounds of Thunder are strongly written.

Cheers...

More work!

I thought I'd be able to take it easy one evening... get to know the in-laws, 'n stuff.

Drew took the ladies to Durango (the man stayed back, intending to go fishing again, today), so I've been here at the store all day. About 11 am this morning, the client I've been working with these past few days called with one more item. It turns out one of the other translators on the project - or maybe the other translator on the project - just got to the point where he couldn't go on, or something, so there are 14 pages left. "Would I do them?" asked the client, sweetly.

(What am I going to do, say no?)

I figure, based on previous documents, that the work'll take about 4 hours, maybe 5. If I do a "minimum close" on the store (collect the money, write down three numbers, throw all the valuables into the safe and lock it, turn off everything, lock the doors), I can be home by 6:20 pm. Dinner stretches it to 7, assuming dinner is ready. Dinner over, I can probably get everything done by midnight.

Whoo. Pee.

I'm seriously thinking of going home, wolfing down dinner, then maybe going to sleep at, like, 7:30-8 pm or so, and then rising five hours later and pitching in. Drew would then have to deal with the store tomorrow, but I anticipate that to be the case anyway.

Galina's real-estate contract did not go through. She's staying one more day to try to salvage something of the situation, and tells me she will be on the road tomorrow, which will put her in town on Friday, sometime during the day.

I can't wait. :^)

Cheers...
