The cell phone rang several times today, but none of the calls were from clients. (They're probably all waiting until tomorrow to pounce!)

So I spent all day at the store, where the highlight was having Shannon and Huntur drop by just before leaving for California. "All day" included a couple of hours after closing - together with Galina, Drew, and Lee - moving stuff around and painting walls (it started out I just wanted to paint the drywall that was installed about 10 days ago. By the time we finished, we'd textured that section, bought a whole gallon of additional paint, painted the entire back wall, as well as 10-15 feet of the side walls). We also have all the computers, credit card terminals, etc. all over the place, and were too tired to stay longer and put everything back. And when it does go back, we're going to move some stuff into other positions.

So, I have the alarm set for 5 am, intending to go in around 6. It's going to take a couple of hours, methinks, to put everything where we want it.

I've been experimenting with some shareware programs for doing faxes on computer at the store. The idea behind this move is to combat two problems and create a new service for the store.

The two problems involve wasted faxes, in the form of "junk" faxes (we seem to be getting around 3-4 per day) and faxes that arrive and which are never claimed (we had a 50-plus page fax come in several weeks ago, and a call to the sender resulted in a promise to provide us with the recipient's phone number here locally, but that never materialized).

The first program was something called SnappyFax, if memory serves. The basic problem I found with the program was getting it to set the faxmodem up to receive faxes. Either the modem never picked up, or if it did, it did so for the first incoming fax and then ignored anything else. I pretty much played with every combination of settings that I could, but the program failed my test suite (first call hangs up after fax tone is heard, second call is a real fax).

I've forgotten the name of the second program; I think it's simply "Fax Machine." It passed my test suite, but I'm not too thrilled with the images that it prints, but that may be a function of the printer we're using at the store (a HP Deskjet 650 dinosaur).

The Country Center, which is the name of our little shopping center, seems to be filling up. There's a Chinese restaurant coming in, and a small jewelry shop. A hobby shop opened its doors recently (I only noticed it today, and got there too late to browse), and there's some kind of sports apparel/equipment shop going in a few doors down. The joint looks to be really hopping!

I was too tired to do invoices today, and may not have the time to do them tomorrow, but that's all right. I'm just wondering whether to consider today to have been a day off?

Cheers...
