It's hard to say how far I got yesterday with the one and only job that's on my plate right now (and due in a little over 7 hours). The SDLX translation memory software shows I am a little over halfway through, though a count of physical pages shows me as having finished 10 of 24 pages.

One thing that distressed me while processing another document in SDLX is that any Cyrillic in the target (translated) text is dealt with poorly (each letter is replaced by a question mark). Documents intended for NASA consumption are rich in Cyrillic, especially abbreviations. So... I may be faced with a nightmare when it comes to looking at the complete translation (it may take an hour or more just to replace all the '?').

* * *
I just got off the phone with the client. The work is extended to tomorrow morning at 9, though I am sure I will be able to complete it by, say, 8 pm tonight.

Another phone call followed close on the heels of that one, offering me a rush job for tomorrow morning. I declined.

Yet another phone call came soon after, offering me the "Thursday telecon." I accepted.

The phone seems to have quieted (it always does that when you turn it off :^), so now I can get to work.

Cheers...

Well, I completed my first pass through the document a few minutes ago, and as I feared, I have '?' characters wherever Cyrillic should appear in the translation. I also have to do the highly recommended spell-check/review/correction/read-through before sending the thing off.

Good thing I asked for an extension.

The Airlock Depress/Repress and EVA Equipment document is finished and sent.

Overall, it looks like I did a little more than 10,000 words in two days. I'm beat.

The telecon has been cancelled. I think it may be because the group I interpret for is having a face-to-face meeting this week (supported by a local meeting interpreter in Houston), and if they are to have a telecon with other colleagues back in Russia, it only makes sense to have the local interpreter handle it. (I seem to recall this was a recurring problem back when I worked in Houston. Sometimes, the word never got passed along to the right parties, so both a meeting interpreter and a telecon interpreter would show up for work at a telecon, causing a measure of inconvenience.)

I now officially have nothing left on my plate. I feel good about that right now, but give me a couple of days and I'll probably start to sound like Feht, who is readily spooked into a paranoid state if nobody calls for a couple of days.

Talking about Feht, there was a rumor that he might go on an extended assignment to Houston, but that's in the air right now. And talking about Houston, I've been offered a stint that starts April 22 and goes to May 10, which I have accepted, although reluctantly, since I'll probably again be doing middle-of-the-night work and ignoring the clients that I have developed while working from Colorado.

OTOH, it will give me an opportunity to get Lee (and Sasha) back to Houston in an economically efficient manner (with me), and it is, after all, an assignment.

I think I'm going to turn off my computers for the night (except for 'onegin', who's on mail duty), or at least limit my efforts to working with the Perl script I started on a few days ago.

Then again, Shannon is leaving for California tomorrow afternoon, to attend some family function (a shower for someone, if memory serves), and is taking Huntur with her. She is going with a friend of hers who also lives in Pagosa, and who also has relatives in the same town on the Left Coast (their parents are friends and the friend is attending the same function). I seem to recall having promised to help get her tax forms printed out so she can sign them before she leaves (so I guess I'm not really through with computers for the night, after all).

Cheers...
