A post on Slashdot notes that
In other news, today was spent mostly shuffling paper. I even managed to nap. All of my outstanding invoices have been sent, and all is mostly right with the world.
Right now, I'm listening to the soft gurgle of water boiling in the pressure cooker, which is being used to process some strawberry jam I made a little while ago. There are 7 minutes left to go, after which the jars get taken out of the water and are allowed to cool.
The urge to make the jam came over me as I was returning from the kids' place after closing the store. Don't ask me why. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Al H., the proprietor of the liquor store next door, finally succumbed to liver cancer yesterday. Despite the fact I didn't know the man well at all, it is still sobering to have had the Grim Reaper drop by for a visit so close by. I knew he'd been sick for some time, but was not aware that he'd passed on until I saw the sign to that effect in the door of his shop earlier today.
What is the connection? I don't know, except that it's been years since I've canned anything, and the process helps take your mind off your everyday cares.
Tomorrow is Shannon's birthday, and the kids are throwing a barbeque after the shop closes, to celebrate both their birthdays (which occur within a week of one another). I will make an appearance, but it's going to be mostly their peer group in attendance. I've actually got an invitation to be somewhere else at 6 pm, so it's no big deal.
* * * I've just removed the jam from the boiling water, and the jars are now cooling.
I'm going to go see what's on the tube and then come back in a while to check the seals.
Cheers...
Texas Rep. Joe Barton has been quoted today in an AP article saying that he is in favor of grounding the remaining fleet of shuttles. 'If we have to stop manned spaceflight for five or 10 years, then so be it.'Now, there may or may not be good reasons to ground the Shuttle fleet. But if Congresscritter Barton thinks the rest of the world is going to sit on its hands, staring at the heavens and waiting for the U.S. to get back into space, he is seriously delusional. (Hint: People's Republic of China.)
