I worked through most of yesterday afternoon editing a 6,000-word translation that might be called... no, that's not right. I was about to say "a glaring example of why one should not translate out of one's native language," but was stopped by the memory of a different recent document that is a much better candidate (and oh, do I wish I had snagged a copy, but I didn't... then again, what would I have done with it?)

Wow. Talk about having your train of thought getting derailed. Anyway...

I finally put the thing to sleep around 6 pm, when I went upstairs to fix some food for me and Ming (separately, in case you're wondering). For a lark, I flipped around the channels on the idiot box and saw that Thomas Crown Affair was starting in a few minutes.

Not the fairly entertaining remake of recent vintage, but the original McCoy, from 1968, featuring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway.

Fortunately, dinner was almost ready, so I served the two of us and proceeded to absorb this classic. I loved it. It's not quite as polished as the remake, but its cinematography is remarkable in its own way. I thought the use of the windows was an effective way of emphasizing simultaneity and the chess game between Dunaway and McQueen was marvelous.

I fell asleep early, but woke up at midnight, wide awake and could not go back to sleep. So, I returned to my office, did a spell check of the document I'd finished editing, and then packaged it up for delivery.

I finally fell asleep around 3 am.

This morning's routine has been, well, routine. I returned around 10:30, napped, and then set about invoicing my two week assignment. I kid you not, it seems there are more and more hoops to jump through every time I do this. In the end, I produced an invoice with eleven attachments (various authorizations and time sheets). OTOH, the payday is not exactly painful to look at, if you get my drift.

I have two translation documents due tomorrow morning, but I'll worry about them after the store closes, (though I may take the shorter of the two along with me here shortly and do it in between customers).

I am still not caught up, but hey, I'm just one guy. I'll get there.

Cheers...

I can't easily find the posts I made using it, but the 'Perl/1.0.1 (a) 9/16: 00, alexpgp' client listed in my profile was an early attempt on my part to create a post-by-email capability that has been recently added to the goodies available to paid accounts here on LJ.

It's been a pretty lively afternoon here at the store, so I wasn't able to do anything with the translation. It's a shortie, anyhow, so I don't anticipate problems doing it tonight along with the Excel file that arrived earlier today. I did manage to deposit some checks in the bank (with Huntur as my bodyguard) and to pay some bills.

I do need to go do some shopping before the store closes, however.

Cheers...

P.S. Incoming mail needs to have no carriage returns, else the post will.

[UPDATE: The date in the client description (9/16) ought to have given me a clue as to where to look for the posts I mention. Here, of course.]

I've finished first passes for both documents due tomorrow, and will check them tomorrow before sending them.

Déjà Vu made it possible for me to whittle a fairly large Excel file down to size. The only fly in the ointment was having to have the file open on a neighboring machine, because the client doesn't want the whole thing translated (only one column). I could probably have made my life easier by first copying the column to a separate spreadsheet and then translating that file, but that idea only occurred to me after getting deeply into the work.

And so, it's off to sleep. Hopefully, tonight I will experience a better quality of shuteye than I've been able to the past couple of nights.

Cheers...
