Snow!

After days of watching the mountains get white, and days of wet weather at our elevation (albeit not cold enough for the precipitation to freeze much), I awoke this morning to about 1-2" on the ground.

Ming came back from his morning constitutional looking every bit like a cotton ball with a tail.

The mountains are not to be seen. The snow is still falling somewhere between here and there, apparently.

I must get work done today.

Cheers...

Hmm. Only 37 seconds or so of the 52 shown actually play on the system at the store (where Zinf is installed). If I play with the slide control right, I can play the part after the 37-second mark, but as the player approaches "from the left," timewise, it consistently shuts down at 37 seconds. At home, Winamp (ver. 3) Does the Right Thing and plays the file right through, although if I have Winamp continuously replay the file, there is a few seconds' overlap between the head and tail of the recording. Go figure.

[Update: Transcription takes entirely too long, IMO, and will only be done in the future for really worthwhile PhonePosts, if any.]

Cheers...

Which are simply two syllables that come to mind right now. I've spent most of my time since about 2 pm working on finishing the neverending editing job, and I just sent off the file with the last of the material that I have.

There really isn't much to catch up on. Natalie went to look for Himanen's Hacker Ethic, but Borders told her the book is out of print. I'm sort of surprised at that, and actually even more surprised that the text is not available online, along the lines of a number of other books one might think of as being roughly in the same genre (e.g., Eric Raymond's The Cathedral and The Bazaar).

The recent hammering of Pekka Himanen's name into my consciousness causes me to recall how his name popped up in a recent translation of an article on Finnish defense doctrine, of all things. The man gets around.

The power around here went out for a couple of hours this afternoon, which gave me a wonderful opportunity to take a nap. Such an outage seems to be a rite of passage into winter around here. Fortunately, the power came back on pretty quickly, which allowed me to start working on the edits.

Today would appear to have been a fairly sedentary day, as I logged only about 6500 steps with the pedometer I picked up in Phoenix. So far, it would appear that days where I spend most of my time at and around the store are about twice as active, in terms of steps, and therefore, probably beneficial in terms of excercise, at least as compared to days spent translating.

Lack of wheels will probably force me to miss tomorrow's ham breakfast, but that's the way the cookie crumbles, sometimes. I seem to recall I have a doctor's appointment in Durango tomorrow at 12:15 pm; that, I cannot miss.

Cheers...
