Moving along smoothly...
Dec. 22nd, 2005 07:51 pmI could have sworn that the humidifier I unearthed recently used to put out visible vapor, but the new humidifier I bought today (for the astounding sum of $17) doesn't put out vapor either, despite a noticeable drop in the level of water in the unit's reservoir over time.
So just to check, I marked the water level in the old unit and set it going. After six hours, I'd have to say the old unit works, but its performance is very poor and does not compare to that of the new unit. Then again, the filter on the old one is damaged.
The apparent principle of operation of both units involves creating a flow of ambient air through a sponge-like filter whose bottom end is immersed in a pool of water fed by a reservoir. The filter is not very dense, to allow air to pass freely, but at the same time there are no straight-through paths, to make sure that air has a chance to come into contact with wet filter surfaces and take up some water via evaporation.
The filter on the old unit suffered some damage when I rinsed it in dilute bleach (to wash off scale and kill some mold), allowing air to flow pretty much unhindered through the damaged area. I suspect this "hole" is what has degraded the operation of the old unit. The hardware store where I bought the new unit has apparently changed inventory enough to where the old unit is no longer carried, nor are any of the available filters suitable for the old unit. There are, I am sure, ways to get around this.
* * * After finishing off some newly arrived files, I turned to the task of revamping the WackoWiki CSS file, and after making some small modifications to the PHP file that renders headers, I think I've come close enough (with Wacko) to the layout achievable via MediaWiki to seriously consider migrating my "work" site to the former package. All in good time, though.
Galina will be leaving tomorrow morning to go pick up Natalie, who arrives around 9 am at the Albuqurque Sunport. I have to admit, I'm getting pretty excited at the prospect of having the family together for Christmas.
Cheers...
