RIP OS/2

Apparently, IBM is withdrawing OS/2 Warp from the market as of today, and support for the operating system will end at the end of 2006.

Indirectly, OS/2 is what got me to Pagosa in 1993 (I was the product manager for Borland C++ for OS/2 and was caught up in the big December '92 layoff at Borland, after having reserved a vacation in Pagosa for January). OS/2 was also what kept us going in 1993 (I worked as a consultant for IBM).

Time enough to reminisce later. Right now, I have to get ready to go in to the store. Galina is already in Albuquerque (I hope).

Cheers...

Galina left at oh-dark-thirty to go pick up Natalie in Albuquerque and I got up with a raw throat, despite having had the humidifier on all night. The unit is pretty noisy, and I suppose I got a little taste of what it's like to sleep aboard the ISS, where the constant whine of fans, pumps, and motors makes noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs a requirement when one retires for the night.

Drew picked me up around 10 am to help out at the store, even though I knew I wasn't at 100%. By noon or so, I was ready to take a rest in Drew's car, but he took me home instead. I fell into a feverish sleep until after 4 pm and then took it easy until Galina and Natalie returned from a day of shopping along the route home.

Brady called to say Drew had slammed his head against the counter in the store by accident, which makes me wonder if perhaps he hasn't been driven right up against the edge. The holiday season tends to bring out the utterly stupid in people, not to mention that we're beginning to hear that some of the packages sent from the store have been arriving in less-than-pristine condition (which, of course, is our fault).

I feel a bit better now. I even got some food down a little while ago. I plan to go into the store tomorrow and try to give Drew a day off. In any event, we'll all get two whole days off once the store is closed tomorrow afternoon.

Off to sleep.

Cheers...
