Galina left this morning for her continuing education class somewhere over on the west side, on Loop 8, and although I thought she left in plenty of time - a bit before 7 am - to make it to class without incident, I got a call from her at 8:30 (half an hour, I presume, after the class started) asking for directions.

The early reveille threw me off my feed for the morning, during which I moped about the room like a zombie and eventually started reading a science fiction novel that I'd squirreled away in my luggage for a time when I might need it, like this morning.

I managed finally to put the book down about halfway through the story, mostly because I knew that, left to my own devices, I'd go ahead and ignore my growling belly and - more important - a looming deadline if I didn't exert a modicum of, um, backbone in this regard.

I satisfied my hunger at a phơ place a couple of hundred yards from the hotel. Although the food was good, it would appear that I have become accustomed to the way it is served at my usual phơ emporium, as I recall feeling distinctly annoyed that the meat and noodles were not served in a soup, the way they are at the other place.

Should all my troubles be that big.

I settled down to do my outstanding translation after returning to the hotel and it turned out that the references sent along with the assignment were only marginally helpful. Add in that I was working from a faxed original (where the quality of the text on some pages was awful), and you have all the ingredients for a fairly slow job. However, as I have no transportation and no other distractions (except for the second half of the book, which is an itch I can allow to remain unscratched because hey, tomorrow is Galina's second day of class!), I was able to get through the text in a fairly workmanlike manner, and checking it over tomorrow will not take long.

In other news, I either left the most important of my thumb drives at home for this trip, or I lost it somewhere along the way soon after departing from home, because I can't find the silly thing. Fortunately, I've been able to go online and fetch recent submitted documents and invoices, so the impact is minimal; I'd probably be a lot worse off had I forgotten any of the other thumb drives that did make it on this trip.

Cheers...
