Starting to feel that itch...
Apr. 16th, 2010 09:43 pmPulling roots and relocating for any period of time is difficult enough, but when the closest town is 60 km away, accessible only occasionally, and with no electronics stores to speak of I start getting itchy about making sure I'm taking the right "infrastructure" along (e.g., USB cables, power supplies, thumb drives, etc.), and also, that I've got all the files I'm going to need (and made backups of them all).
(It occurs to me that one might reasonably wonder whether the town I'm describing is Durango, Colorado, or Baikonur, Kazakhstan. I have the latter in mind, as Durango does, at least, have an Office Depot.)
I am here reminded of the time Galina and I took a vacation in Spain, a combination of a time-share exchange and cashing in flocks of frequent flier miles (on different airlines, to different destinations: Galina, to London; me, to Lisbon).
At the time, I had only recently become a PalmPilot convert, and indeed, so impressed was I with the PDA that I decided to risk a whole 10 days without my computer, figuring I could do everything I needed to do with my Palm.
As things turned out, my Palm disappeared in the cab that took me from the airport to the railroad station (almost certainly when the cabbie "helped" me with my hand luggage). I was fit to be tied, though in the end, I managed to survive the vacation without a computing device.
The happy ending to the story occurred the morning after I returned from Europe, when I stopped by a CompUSA and bought a new PalmPilot (yeah, okay, a $400 ouch!) that I took out of its box, put in my old cradle, and then synchronized to the state it was in the afternoon I left for vacation!
(Try that with a paper planner!)
* * * Galina and I went to Durango to pick up the Ford. I was halfway expecting to see the bill for replacing the engine padded with miscellaneous stuff, but with the exception of fluids, the job was done for the amount that was quoted (which was about 50% of what the local talent had proposed). The car ran, too.
I am turning into a cynical so-and-so in my old age, methinks.
Cheers...
